Local Somerset Willow Artist & TutorÂ
Since discovering her passion for willow weaving in 2014, Jo has become a renowned sculptor specialising in creating intricate willow and metal sculptures. Based in Somerset, Jo works predominantly from home, using locally grown willow from Musgrove Willows on the Somerset Levels.

Jo accepts commissions for all occasions, including weddings, gifts, and large-scale installations. Some of her recent notable projects include a flock of sheep and a cow for The Newt in Somerset and other her rutting stags that are on loan and can be visited at Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens.

What is the best way to preserve an outdoor willow sculpture?To extend the life of your sculpture, apply a 50/50 mix of boiled linseed oil and turpentine once a year. This can be brushed or sprayed on to help protect it from the elements.

Can I book a private group workshop or event?Yes! Jo offers bespoke group workshops for birthdays, hen dos, community groups, and corporate away days. We can come to you, or you can use one of our established venues, such as Mello View. Private group bookings start from £85 per person (minimum 6 participants). What should I wear and bring with me?Please wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting messy, and closed-toe shoes. Many venues are rustic or outdoors, so layers and waterproofs are helpful. We provide all tools and materials. You’re welcome to bring snacks or your own lunch if you prefer. Please check if lunch is provided at the venue of your choice.

How long should willow be soaked for?Soaking times vary depending on the willow variety, weather, water temperature, and how long it’s been stored. Typically, soak in cold water, and mellow the willow afterward by wrapping it in hessian or a blanket overnight. Be careful not to over-soak, as this can damage the fibres. Are there any age restrictions for workshops?Yes. Workshops are suitable for participants aged 11 and over, as long as they are accompanied by a participating adult. For those attending alone, the minimum age is 18.

Do you offer gift cards?Yes! Gift cards are available and make a wonderful present for anyone who loves craft, nature, or trying something new. Gift cards can be used towards any workshop on josadlerwillow.com. Visit the Gift Card page to purchase.

Will my willow course affect my allergies?Some willow can develop mould during soaking. If you have allergies, please bring any necessary medication and consider wearing a mask during the workshop. Please be aware that willow bark can cause allergic reactions in individuals sensitive to aspirin or those taking certain medications (e.g., blood thinners, beta-blockers, or acetaminophen/Tylenol). We also serve a home-cooked lunch at some venues, so please let us know in advance about any dietary requirements or allergies.

Where can I plant a living willow structure?Living willow structures like arbours, tunnels, or tepees can be safely planted near outbuildings, as they don’t have the deep root systems of mature willow trees. Can people with disabilities or physical impairments attend a workshop?We warmly welcome participants with disabilities or additional needs, but we ask that you contact us directly before booking. Some of our venues are adaptable, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your requirements. Please be aware that willow weaving can be physically demanding, it involves strength and dexterity in the hands, which may be challenging for those with arthritis, repetitive strain injuries, or reduced mobility. We’d love to have you along, and by discussing your needs in advance, we can work together to ensure you get the most from the experience.

What types of sculptures can I make?Sculpture subjects vary by workshop, including hares, deer, pigs, owls, chickens, bees, and seasonal projects like wreaths or bird nests. Do I need any experience to join a willow craft course?Not at all! Jo’s willow workshops are designed to be welcoming to complete beginners as well as those with a creative streak. You’ll be guided step-by-step to create a beautiful sculpture in a relaxed, supportive setting.
